Fibreglass Panels

68-82 Corvette Body Panels & Fiberglass

Press Molded Panels – 1968-1972 Corvette factory fiberglass panels were produced in molds that created an exceptionally strong part smooth on both sides.

SMC Panels – 1973-1982 Corvettes were assembled of panels made from a sheet molded composite (“SMC”). SMC panels are formed by a high-pressure mold compressing a mix of fiberglass, resin, catalyst and release agent. SMC pieces are smoother than press molded fiberglass panels and have a marbled appearance – typically gray in color.

*Note SMC panels require special adhesives for bonding.
** Note Some 1973 cars had a combination of Press Molded and SMC

Fiberglass Repair Notes
In my experience, no matter what year corvette you have, use a good Epoxy based resin with any standard matt. Epoxy resin works good with all types of fiberglass. If you try to use standard polyester based resins on SMC panels it will not stick, and will come off like a scab. Epoxy resins chemically bond to the panel and will not come off. It becomes part of the panel.
